Who was Ashley?
Some people leave an impression that lasts long after their time with us. For the Savannah State University band family, Ashley Johnson was one of those people.
Ashley was a proud member of the Iota Zeta Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, a dedicated trombone player, a leader, and a cherished friend. Known for her bubbly personality, infectious smile, and unwavering commitment to the band, she had a special way of encouraging and motivating those around her.
Following her passing in 2011, the Ashley Johnson Memorial Scholarship was established to honor her life and carry forward the spirit of service, leadership, friendship, and dedication that she embodied.
Through this scholarship, Ashley's legacy continues to make a difference in the lives of student musicians who share her passion for music and the Savannah State University band program.
A New Chapter for Ashley's Legacy
As we celebrate the Iota Zeta Chapter's 20th anniversary during Homecoming 2026, we're proud to relaunch the Ashley Johnson Memorial Scholarship with a renewed commitment to supporting the next generation of Savannah State band students.
For the first time, we're inviting the entire Savannah State band alumni community, along with family, friends, and supporters, to join us in this effort.
Our goal is to raise at least $2,500 to award scholarships to a minimum of two deserving band students. Every contribution, regardless of size, brings us closer to providing meaningful financial support while honoring a fellow band member whose legacy continues to inspire us.
This is more than a fundraising campaign. It's an opportunity to reconnect as a band family, celebrate the impact of those who came before us, and demonstrate what we can accomplish when we invest in those who will carry our legacy forward.
Making History at Homecoming 2026
This year, we hope to celebrate Ashley's legacy in a way we never have before.
For the first time in the scholarship's history, we are working toward presenting the Ashley Johnson Memorial Scholarship during the Homecoming football game's halftime festivities, recognizing our scholarship recipients on the field before the Savannah State community. This historic moment will bring together alumni, current students, and supporters in a shared celebration of Ashley's life and the enduring legacy of the Savannah State band family.
Our $2,500 fundraising goal also meets the university's minimum requirement for a scholarship presentation during the Homecoming halftime show.
Together, we have an opportunity to make this year's celebration especially meaningful—not only by remembering Ashley, but by creating new opportunities for the students following in her footsteps.
Please Note: Track Access Policy for Homecoming 2026
Per Savannah State University policy, individuals wishing to access the football field track during Homecoming must have contributed to a scholarship being presented that day.
To access the track with the band and IZAA and participate in the Ashley Johnson Memorial Scholarship presentation, each individual must contribute a minimum of $30 to the scholarship.
Donations of any amount are welcome and appreciated; however, only contributors who donate $30 or more will be eligible for track access as part of the scholarship presentation. Additional details regarding access and check-in procedures will be shared with eligible donors prior to Homecoming.

Help us Feed the POTS for SSU POTS Band Day 2025!
We’re making HISTORY! For the first time ever, Savannah State University’s Band Day will feature over 700 local high school band students near and far joining forces with our very own POTS Marching Band!
We’re expecting over 1,000 people and need your help to make it a success! Our fundraising goal for this event is specifically to feed SSU's band, as we have funds covered to feed high school bands students. But we still need assistance covering supplies for our beloved POTS. Please consider donating today!

Thank you to everyone who donated for SSU Homecoming 2025!
Thanks to our donors, we were able to successfully feed the band for all of their performances during SSU's 2025 Homecoming weekend. We received additional assistance from the SSUNAA and the Blue Family, as well as Krush Groove and other Band Alumni, to serve the band meals throughout the weekend.
